Manche, the land of the Men of the North
Manche, the land of the 'Men of the North', a garden that is all greenery inside and blue all around, has a unique identity: it is richly endowed with a wide range of astonishing landscapes. The great coastal features - the Baie des Veys, the island of Tatihou, the headlands, the harbours, the mielles, those long beaches of fine sand - stretch along more than 300 km of unspoilt coastline.
Manche, a peninsula that boasts a multi-faceted, unspoilt natural heritage. Within sight of both land and sea, its footpaths thread their way through a superb landscape rich in magnificent sites to visit: the Cotentin, with its beaches of granite rocks or fine sand, or its great flood plains, the green fields and hedgerows of the Pays de Coutances and the valley of the Vire, the escarpments of the Mortanais, and then...in the far south... the Bay of Mont St Michel.

Must see: the customs officers' paths at La Hague, Jacques Prévert's house at Omonville la Petite, the Cap Lévi fortress at Fermainville, the Abbey of Hambye, the island of Tatihou, the botanic gardens at Vauville, the Jardins d'Argence at Saussey, the "Jazz under the Apple-trees" festival at Coutances (during Ascension week), the national stud at St Lô, the waterfalls at Mortain, the Mont St Michel...
Must try: the two regional dishes, either savoury or sweet, based on local produce and accompanied by a local drink - an initiative of the Fédération Normande des Pays d'Accueil Touristique, bringing together local producers and restaurant owners; 'andouille de Vire', a cold sausage; cider and calvados; lamb from the salt-marshes by the Mont St Michel...
